Getting Started

How do I search for an address? Open Oikosly and type a street address, suburb, or postcode into the search bar on the Home tab. Select a match from the suggestions to see everything Oikosly knows about that area.

Why is Oikosly asking for my location? Location access lets Oikosly centre the map on where you are and suggest nearby addresses, which is optional and only used to make searching easier. You can search any Australian address without granting location access — just decline the permission prompt or turn it off later in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Oikosly.

How do I save an address? From an address's overview screen, tap the save/bookmark option to add it to your saved list. Saved addresses live on your device and are available from the Home tab any time.

How do I remove a saved address? Swipe to delete, or open the address and tap the save icon again to un-save it.

Understanding the Data

Where does the population and housing data come from? From the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census, at the SA2 (small area) level, plus suburb boundary and locality data from PSMA / the Digital Atlas of Australia.

Why don't I see crime data for every address? Crime statistics come directly from each state or territory's police service, and each one publishes data differently — some at suburb level, some at a broader regional or divisional level, and some not at all in a form we can show reliably. Where an area's police service doesn't publish suitable data, Oikosly leaves that section out rather than guess or estimate.

Why don't I see development applications for every address? Development application (DA) and complying development certificate (CDC) data comes from the NSW Planning Portal, individual Queensland council systems, and PlanningAlerts.org.au for VIC, ACT, SA, WA, NT, and TAS. Coverage depends on which councils and authorities publish this data and in what form — some councils (for example, a handful in Tasmania and Queensland) aren't yet covered by any public feed we can access. If nothing shows up nearby, it usually means no matching application has been lodged recently, or the local council doesn't yet publish this data publicly.

How current is the data? It varies by source. Development applications are generally pulled live or near-live from the relevant portal. Crime statistics are refreshed periodically (typically monthly or quarterly) by each police service, so they reflect a recent snapshot rather than real-time figures — Oikosly shows the reporting period alongside the data where available.

Can I trust this data for something important, like buying a property? Oikosly is a starting point for understanding a neighbourhood, not a substitute for official searches or professional advice. For anything decision-critical — conveyancing, safety, planning approval status — always verify directly with the relevant council, police service, or a qualified professional.

Troubleshooting

My search isn't finding an address. Double-check the spelling and try including the suburb or postcode. Oikosly searches Australian addresses only. If an address genuinely can't be found, it may be very new or not yet indexed by Apple Maps — try a nearby address or the suburb name instead.

A detail sheet (crime, development, demographics) is empty or shows "not available." This usually means that specific data isn't published for that state, council, or area — see "Understanding the Data" above. It's not a bug; Oikosly deliberately doesn't fill gaps with estimates.

The map isn't showing the suburb boundary or markers. Give the App a moment to load — boundary and development data are fetched after the address loads. If it still doesn't appear after a minute, try closing and reopening the address, or check your internet connection.

The App won't open or keeps crashing. Make sure you're on the latest version of Oikosly from the App Store, and that your device is running a supported iOS version. If the issue persists, contact us with your device model and iOS version so we can investigate.
